Wedding Details : Garter and Jewelry :: {Engaged} Photographer’s Perspective

Planning a wedding can be challenging with all of the little details to pay attention to, including those that will adorning you – as the bride – the center of attention on the big day.  Not only will your dress be breathtaking, it has the option of being complimented by your hair, jewelry, garter, shoes, and more.  You can find the jewelry of your dreams and the perfect garter, or choose to make your own to personalize your attire in every way.  No matter what, you won’t regret putting some extra thought into these accessories.

It is tradition in North America for the bride to wear two garters; one for keeping and one to throw.  Both garters are worn just above the right knee, under her dress.  At the reception, just after the bouquet toss, the garter is removed by the groom while the bride sits in a chair.  He then throws it to all of the single male guests.  If you want to be super traditional about it, the man who catches the garter has been known to then place it on the leg of the single lady that caught the bouquet.   Most of the weddings I have been to don’t pay too close of attention to the “rules” and choose to put a modern twist to wedding traditions.

undefinedundefinedYou can find garters at craft stores, jewelry stores, clothing stores, and online.  Some are pre-made and ready to order as a kit, and some you can personalize with your name, the date, or anything else that screams “you”.

Another really hard decision for brides is what jewelry to wear.  Some of us may have it easy, with a vintage family keepsake to proudly wear or a friend who makes fabulous jewelry.  On the other hand, there are so many options for jewelry it can be overwhelming trying to find the right place to go.  The jewelry choices really depends on the type of dress you are wearing.  If your dress is white, you probably will want a silver or a white pearl.  If your dress is ivory or a color other than white, you can pull off a more vintage cream pearl color.  If you want to wear a different color all together, there are plenty of finds there as well.

Go bold with your nails to create an even more personalized look!  I loved Arianna’s nails on her wedding day… with toes to match 🙂  Not to mention her amazing bracelet… I want one!

Sometimes the bride and groom decide to have a gift exchange just before the ceremony.  Katie’s watch below was given to her by the groom just before they took a few pictures.  It was heartwarming to capture the emotion on camera as she opened it.
